The Humane Society of the United States and Front Range Equine Rescue plan to file suit immediately against the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service to put a stop to this agency’s decision to allow a New Mexico company federal inspection for the slaughter of horses. Bare in mind there are countless thousands of wild and abandoned horses that are starving on U.S. rangelands. Front Range Equine Rescue says on their web site “The U.S. Department of Agriculture has given the green light for the grisly practice of horse slaughter to resume on U.S. soil.” Not everyone feels that way...and one of those people is in the cattle business. Wyatt Prescott, Executive Director of the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association had this to say: “ Those horses are a resource that utilize resources and they in turn need to be utilized in the most effective and efficient way.Our culture doesn’t consume those products but other cultures do and there are lots of other products that can be utilized and produced out of harvesting horses so we are encouraged to see this step.” Humane harvest or starvation and thirst? A lot to consider...seriously.
