Food Police
The food police are at it again, and it begs the question, how much is simply more than we need to know about the food we consume each day, I’m Susan Allen stay tuned for Open Range. Starting this month buying hamburger, ground meat or ground turkey just got a bit more tricker, beyond just deciding on lean or extra lean today’s new hamburger patty is now required by law to have nutrition facts posted on it’s label. Meaning we now not only know the percentage of fat, but the calories, grams of total fat and grams of saturated fat. In essence all, and more than you or I ever wanted to know about a ground patty. Elizabeth Hagen the Under secretary for the governments food safety department apparently thinks nutritional information about ground meat is pretty darn important as she is touting the new labels as a step in the right direction to help consumers make more informed food purchases decisions”. And for those of you that want to delve even deeper into the particles of ground meats you can visit the Food Safety and Inspection Service website where they have posted a variety of labels allowing you to see how for example just how ground turkey stakes up with a beef or buffalo patty. Yes, I understand in this era of food czars and organic White House gardens you can never have too much information, but that doesn’t mean I can still yearn for the gold old days when kids ate hot dogs at ball games and I could order a juicily old hamburger with a large side of fries without visions of the first lady wagging a finger in my face.
