Who is and who isn't a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers

Washington Ag Today November 18, 2011 The Washington Association of Wheat Growers is working on a major public relations campaign. The Washington Grain Commission has provided some funding for it but the association plans a membership drive to raise even more.

Outgoing WAWG President Ben Barstow says a lot of people think they are members of the Wheat Growers Association but they are not.

Barstow: “Most people we tend to find think that if they get Wheat Life magazine everyone thinks that means they are a member of the wheat growers organization. But if you get Wheat Life magazine all that means is that some time or other you have sold grain and paid an assessment to the Washington Grain Commission and the commission does their educational outreach through the Wheat Life magazine. But the magazine is owned by the growers association and if you are not a member of the growers association you can still get the magazine but you are not a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.”

You have to pay dues to be a member. Dues are important but the organization also needs people to do all the work that benefits all wheat farmers and landlords.

Barstow: “Yes, it makes the organization look and function a lot better if we have a larger membership. And there are great benefits to being actively involved too I believe. I have learned an awful lot from the farmers who are involved in this organization through my involvement.”

The Washington wheat growers met this week in Spokane in a joint convention with farmers from Idaho and Oregon.
