9-30 IAN Diminishing water

Diminishing land and water resources, with increasing world population could spell disaster if not for good science.  We have all heard it time and time again, world population increases are going to demand greater food production. However, water and land have to satisfy that need. Dr. Essie Fallahi, Parma Research and Extension Center research professor of pomology and his colleagues recognize this. “We can save up to 60% of water by application of unique types of drip systems that we have been using for the last 50 years. Irrigation is becoming an important issue because as the population grows there is more and more need for water. At the same time we are losing some of the best land for construction. These 2 factors mandate that we use water and land very efficiently. We have been testing new designs of orchard systems where we have the highest possible number of trees per acre while having a minimum amount of irrigation.
