Fruits & Veggies Report Card

Fruits & Veggies Report Card. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Some good and bad news when it comes to fruits and veggies. Elizabeth Pivonka, President and CEO of the Produce for Better Health Foundation talks about a new report from the National Fruit & Vegetable Alliance. PIVONKA: It's basically a look back at what has changed over the past five years. In 2005 following the 2005 Dietary Guidelines, when those guidelines were released basically recommending as many as 13 servings for some people and what this report card does is takes a look at progress – or not that was made over the past 5 years. The message at the time was "5 a Day" which they felt was even a bit daunting for some people and that was revamped a few years ago to "More Matters." PIVONKA: So in a nutshell we actually saw some nice progress. In fact if we had done this report card in 2005 it would have been pretty dismal but this 2010 report card we actually see some progress in some areas which is very good. However we still have some areas where there's been minimal progress or some flat change or even moving away from our target. So that's what the report card was all about is to talk about where we are getting an "A," "B" or "C" and then where we're getting a "D" or failing. Over the next few reports we will take a look at how that report card shaped up and what that will mean for producers here in the northwest. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
