Oregon Cherries Doing Well

Oregon Cherries Doing Well

Oregon Cherries Doing Well. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Gip Redman, President of the Oregon Cherry Growers is still being a bit cautious but you get the idea that he really wants to be happy about this years Oregon cherry crop. REDMAN: Well I think it's a little premature but overall there's a lot better feeling this year. At least some anticipation where last year nobody knew what to expect but they've been hearing some pretty good reports about the market so there's hope. So far most of the season has been kind of a good news/bad news situation. REDMAN: The thing that is going to hurt some of the growers is they didn't have very good tonnage – either because of frost or pollination. Most of the wind scarring and stuff that we saw a good percent was on smaller sizes and got eliminated so that there were pretty good pack outs so that's another promising thing. Still as in the game of growing crops it can be hit and miss. REDMAN: The end results of the year are actually going to get us closer to the prediction that we started with. Some of the later areas had some fairly decent crops like Dufur and Parkdale but even there, there were orchards that were shy or growers that didn't have a real good crop while right across there would be an excellent crop. We will check back in with Gip in another few weeks and see how things are winding up. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
