Harvest 2010

Harvest 2010

Here it is the beginning of August and despite all the woe is me weather in the spring, a decent harvest may be days away. I’m David Sparks and I’ll be right back with that story.

We did all the stories this spring. It’s raining. It’s cold. Will this kind of weather ever end so we can get our crops in the ground and get growing? Well isn’t it amazing and yes…God does work in funny ways. With a mini-heat wave working in favor of farmers, Treasure Valley farmers could start their 2010 harvest pretty much now or very soon. Some fields are tipping over due to heavy heads but a dry weather trend is favoring farmers. Here’s Treasure Valley Farmer Sid Freeman with a happy story. “The wheat crop looks really good. It likes that cool, wet spring. We’ve got better than average yield potential out there. So you’re a happy camper? Well I am because the price of wheat is really going up right now at a rapid pace.”

North Idaho farmers started harvesting in some areas of the Palouse, Eastern Idaho is still two weeks to three weeks behind because of the long, cold spring.
