Food & Wine

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today, like every Thursday, is food and wine pairing day. As the end of the year is upon us - I wanted to reflect on some of my favorite foods and of course the wines that go with them.

This past year has been a big one for me when it came to my acquaintance with really focusing on healthy eating and a diet with less meat and it was fun to find the wines that went well with the foods. I have always known that red wine works with vegetables if you just select a method of cooking or a way of seasoning that lends itself to the wine.  When it came to white wine though, my infatuation with the grapefruit quality in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and the array of salads and cheeses it went with, was only surpassed the versatility of the Sauvignon Blanc from Washington state. It was great with every food from zucchini cakes to pasta with pesto sauce and most everything in between – including fried green tomatoes.  Then there was the yummy spicy foods that we have realized for a long time needed some level of residual sugar to put out the fire and what better choice than Riesling.  Potatoes can be cooked in so many different ways that they are great with red and white wines sweet or dry wines.  And finding out that beer and sake are not nearly as good with sushi as sparkling wine is was truly a sensation. And speaking of bubbly who would have thought we would be drinking sparkling Shiraz with vegies right off of the grill? Just thinking about it is making me look oh so forward to 2010 and Vine to Wine Food and wine pairing Thursday. Cheers! and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
