Louie's Legacy

Louie's Legacy

Being in the right place at the right time can sometimes produces big benefits. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back to tell you about one of those times. We've all seen examples of being in the right place at the right time which is way better than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. When a certain cow and Mom happened to cross paths one evening it turned out to be a good thing for a third party. The cow was calving and Mom was checking the cattle when she came upon the cow just as her bull calf was born. The next morning Mom told us all that calf would be kept for a breeding bull. A lucky announcement for the calf because we run a commercial cow herd and don't keep our own bulls. But Mom saw something in the young calf and since the cow was basically a purebred and because Mom's cattle judging skills and her word carries enough weight that we know better than to argue, we agreed. Branding day was pretty eventful with Mom hovering around the knife men, like a mother hen, making sure they didn't operate on "her calf" and the calf holders yelling every now and then that calf #79 just went under the knife. Well calf #79 did survive branding unscathed and as he grew was christened Louie, after Mom. Louie's size and confirmation were not exceptional his first year, but as he grew and developed he became very recognizable as did his calves since his outstanding muscling was stamped on his offspring. Louie produced many excellent steer and heifer calves over the years we used him. Although the bull has been sold his heifers will provide Louie's legacy. I'm Jeff Keane.
