How Horses Have Impacted Culture
John Moore once said “ Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we will find the hoof print of the horse beside it.” I’m Susan Allen stay tuned, Jeff and I will be back with how horses impact our culture. Susan, It has been said that history has been written on the back of a horse. When Winston Churchill penned his quote, often attributed to Ronald Regan “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” it echoed the fact powerful men from Alexander, General Lee to Arnold Schwarzenegger have been greatly influenced by the equine species. Jeff when you think about it, it wasn’t that long ago, our great grandparents era, that if a man out West didn’t own a horse it was the most telling giveaway that he was poor. Today most Americans are several generations removed from a horse based culture, yet race horses, cutters, jumpers still symbolize wealth. …. Madison Avenue is well aware of their power. Pegasus stands for Mobile Oil. Budweiser entertains us with Clydesdales and the makers of Ford Mustang want us to experience the power of wild horses, a force we still call “Horsepower”. And Ralph Lauren’s iconic emblem remains a polo pony. If you still don’t think horses affect our culture think again, from art, entertainment to advertising these magnificent animals continue to transport us out of the mundane.
