US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef

US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef

As a global leader in beef production, the United States has an important role in the discussion of sustainability of the beef industry throughout the value chain. That is why nearly two years ago the beef industry created the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef or USRSB an independent organization that includes producers, allied industry, processors, retailers, academic and non-governmental institutions.

USRSB Administrator Ashley McDonald shares more details about the organization and its objective.

McDonald: “The USRSB or US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef began officially in 2015. So it is just a year and half old approaching two years old this next year. So they’ve done a lot of work and what it is designed to be is a multi-stakeholder — the entire beef supply chain here in the United States — coming together and to form this organization, talk about, collaborate and hopefully eventually move the entire industry towards improved sustainable.”

The term sustainability means a lot of different things to different people and groups. One of the best definitions I’ve heard is that sustainability is a journey, not a destination. McDonald continues

McDonald: “Of course we know that sustainability is not something that is stagnant. It is not, ‘You’re sustainable today and you’ll always be that way.’ It is how do we find ways to continual improve — whether that be a cow-calf producer, a feedlot operator, a retailer or a packer. So everyone has a stake in this and everyone has room for improvement. The USRSB is a way for everyone to come together and have those conversations and hopefully move the ball forward as an entire industry.”
