In the continuing saga of the state of Colorado’s Department of revenue, there is yet another development. A headline in the Journal – Advocate “Sen. demands heads roll in Department of Revenue.” And yes, that Sen. is Jerry Sonnenberg, R-Sterling, who we interviewed about a month ago. He is asking for the resignation of Barbara Brohl as executive director of the Colorado Department of Revenue after a Colorado Supreme Court decision last month paved the way for millions of dollars in tax credits to be paid to oil and gas companies, credits the DOR had denied in past years. You also may remember the name Julie Gentz who was issued tax credits by the Department of Revenue that could be sold after which the DOR revoked these credits and demanded back payment with penalties and interest. I talked with Julie again. “They had a program with Colorado which also involved tax credits as part of their development costs for bringing this business to the state and once again DOR was making legal determinations about the statutes not leaving that up to people with a legal background. They were accountants making legal decisions.”
