I went to a recent series of lectures at a Bayer Crop Sciences symposium and spent two days listening to agricultural experts. It appeared to me that every other word was the word sustainable. One lecture I listened to was presented by the President of the country's largest indoor, commercial, vertical farm and which uses LED grow lights to replace the sun. Green Sense Farms provides what they claim to be nutritious and delicious produce that's good for people and the planet and I spoke with Green Sense Farms Pres., Robert Colangelo. "We are actually in Portage, Indiana, which is about 50 minutes from downtown Chicago. We are purposely there because our inputs are much lower and we can sell into a big metropolitan market of 10 million people. We have built a room within a room so we have a 30,000 ft.² industrial warehouse space with 30 foot ceilings and we have built, think of a big box inside that room and inside that room is our grow room and it is divided into two chambers so we can grow at different temperatures and humidities. We have very controlled climactic conditions. One is for our lettuce and the other is for our micro greens, our baby greens and our culinary herbs. In those rooms we create perfect conditions every day so that climate and weather are never an issue and we get a consistent crop that can be harvested daily."
