Experience International

Experience International. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Experience International provides training, exchange programs, and study tours for both US and non-US citizens in the fields of agriculture, forestry, natural resources management, and conservation. Ines Hanrahan with the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission has been a part of the program for quite some time.

HANRAHAN: It's geared towards bringing in young professional, agriculture professionals from all over the world on an exchange program so they can learn about American agriculture and maybe go back to their countries and apply some of the things they've learned here.

Hanrahan and her husband have been taking in exchange students for nine years now and she says there is a lot of cultural learning on both sides of the program.

HANRAHAN: It's giving people a chance to basically immerse themselves in a different culture and learn about a different culture so there's basically two aspects: one is to learn about agriculture and about different technologies but then there's the aspect of basically culture and goodwill by living in a different culture and experiencing a different culture.

The young students are also an extra set of hands when it comes to working in the orchard or on the ranch which is part of the immersion process. The program must work.

HANRAHAN: So far everybody that's gone through my program has stayed in agriculture although not everybody initially was in ag.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
