A growing frustration in the wine industry has helped drive the development of educational tools according to Vicky Scharlau, Executive Director of the Washington Wine Industry Foundation.

SCHARLAU: The size of the Washington industry is growing exponentially. So we have some very large wineries and some very small and many in between, so creating an online guide as a pathway, because that way regardless of where you are on your journey to be more sustainable, and this is all definitions of sustainability is the be able to have a tool that you can pick up where you are at any point.

She says the Washington Wine Industry Foundation went to work on this issue.

SCHARLAU: What is now known as Winerywise™ is an all on-line guide and it really is a tool for wineries. There's checklists, there's a great deal of information in terms of resources and other places to go all based on what you have in your winery, your equipment, your size and what your ultimate goal is.

Scharlau says Winerywise™ was actually put to the test by members of the wine industry.

SCHARLAU: This guide has a number of chapters. Energy efficiency, water management, education and research, waste management, material handling, preferred purchasing, human resources, site development. Virtually anything you might need to learn more about how to be a better business person in terms of running your winery in Washington State.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
