Apple Trade 2025 Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Trade negotiations continue with export markets around the world, but with an uncertainty that leaves many feeling the stress.Washington Apple Commission President, Michael Schadler says talks continue with several Asian markets with loads of potential, but …
SCHADLER … “Closer to home, if the USMCA renegotiation that’s I believe slated to take place later this year or next year, I think it’s next year. You know, if kind of, the rhetoric gets escalated again and we get into a tit-for-tat with Canada or Mexico, and all of the sudden we find ourselves with, you know, some kind of punitive tariff on apples to Mexico or apples to Canada, that would be extremely hurtful to our industry.”
But Schadler says there are no guarantees …
SCHADLER … “It’s uncertain time. There’s some expectation that things could work out to our advantage, but also some concern that if things don’t go well, we could end up being hurt. So, it’s a very, I guess, interesting to be in the business.”
So, Schadler says we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions because things could work out just fine …
SCHADLER … “Yeah, I hope that’s the case. There’s been some mixed messaging and, kind of like you said, vacillating back and forth on what message is coming out of the administration. But, yeah, it’s something that everybody is paying close attention to right now.”
Again, that’s Michael Schadler, President of the Washington Apple Commission.
