Florida Farm Bill Passes with Broad Support
The Florida Legislature has passed what’s being described as the most comprehensive agriculture-focused legislation in state history. The Florida Farm Bill, or SB 700, was championed by Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson and received strong support in both chambers. It covers a wide range of priorities, including protecting farmland from development, boosting disaster recovery efforts, and investing in ag education.Key measures include a ban on drone use over agricultural lands, support for housing legally verified farmworkers, and a prohibition on local restrictions against such housing. The bill also aims to guard against financial discrimination tied to environmental targets and helps return solar-converted land to active ag use. Additional provisions expand the use of proven Best Management Practices to support water quality.
Educational elements in the bill protect FFA and 4-H programs from zoning limitations and provide scholarships to help students stay involved in agriculture.
Supporters say the legislation reflects a long-term investment in Florida’s agricultural future.
