Ag Trade Issues Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Agricultural trade has seen a lot of challenges over the past few years and will continue to draw a lot of attention heading into the new year and new administration.National Farmers Union president, Rob Larew says some of the bigger trade questions won’t get answered right away …
LAREW … “So, we’ll have to wait and see. Unfortunately, in some of these trade disputes, if they get really bitter, it is always the farmers that end up hurting first.”
And for those who wonder if the soon-to-be President Trump will listen, Larew says we’ll see …
LAREW … “I think there were lessons learned in the last administration. And so that gives me a little bit of hope that there will be a little bit more kind of strategic thinking about how to apply this, whether that’s working with allies if we’re tackling a big issue like China.”
But, Larew says unfortunately, there are no guarantees …
LAREW … “So, I think that, and I’ve heard those in the know, saying that they’re certainly looking at what happened the last go-around, making sure that we can, at the very least, mitigate the effects. But this is a little scary, I have to say.”
Larew says many challenges like trade, getting a new farm bill and labor issues are all on the table and need to be addressed.
