From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. While the Farm Bill is currently the problem getting the most attention in agriculture, it’s not the only problem farmers and ranchers are facing.
Joby Young, Executive Vice President at the American Farm
Bureau, says another big issue facing the industry is California’s Prop 12 …
YOUNG … “When one state says we’ll pass a law that mandates production practices in another state, that can have all kinds of, you know, hypothetical and probably likely things that can develop there.”
And, Young says this goes well beyond just pork …
YOUNG … “They could be looking at a situation where they’re putting products into commerce that might go into two states one day that have conflicting mandatory practices for production. So, where does that put them? How does that affect that farm family? How does that affect the food supply? You know, if consumers are out here, that can affect
affordability and accessibility in our food supply.”
Bottom line, Young says we all stand to lose …
YOUNG … “So, we need a fix for that. We need a federal fix. We’re working on that. There’s a lot of great champions in Congress that have really picked up the baton on that one and are moving forward. But this is going to have to be a bipartisan solution and we’re hopeful for that because this is a bipartisan problem. This is not a regional problem, it’s not a political problem, this is one shared by everybody so we look forward to having a solution on that.”
