Permit that got away

Outfitter Brian Oakland took his son on a fishing trip to Mexico looking to catch permit. Not everything went according to plan. There's a particular fish down there called the permit, and it is a very, very difficult fish to catch. You hear about people doing it, but actually getting it done was very rare. And a lot of people will spend their entire trip trying to catch this one fish. So we're sitting there and I actually had an opportunity to take my son and he has seen pictures of me with permit that I was lucky enough to catch. And there had been a big buildup to him catching his first permit. And as he found out real quick, this is not easy. We spent the first five days he finally made it happen in this pot of fish. You can't believe that's happening. The power of this fish. Really, Truly. We have never caught a saltwater fish of this size. It is crazy. It does take you right into your backing. And for those listeners who don't know what backing is, it's just an extra couple hundred yards of this really thin line that's attached to your fly line so that the fish can run. I had had my reels done by a professional angling shop before we left for the trip, and as my son hooks into this permit, you could see the excitement in his eyes and this permit starts taking off. All of a sudden the line gets into his back and immediately start to kind of chug and start to catch put on wrong and too tight ends line broke. Super devastating. Speaker1: So six days on the water resulting in the old fisherman line. You should have seen the fish that got away. So back to the drawing board.
