Established in 1978, Montana Troutfitters claims that they are Bozeman, Montana’s oldest fly fishing shop! They offer a complete selection of high quality fly fishing tackle and, again, claim to have the area's largest selection of custom, hand-tied trout flies.
Troutfitters various guided fly fishing trips offer an experience on Montana’s blue ribbon rivers and streams such as The Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone, Big Hole and Missouri rivers, as well as numerous small streams. I called them up and got hold of John McPherson who told me what he was using for big Brown’s: “This time of year is a great time because the streamer bite is coming back on and it is one of my favorite ways to fish. You can get into targeting the big brown’s this time of year. They are large baitfish patterns, a lot of them are articulated imitating what is already in the river that those fish are feeding on once they grow to a size that they cannot sustain themselves on a diet of aquatic insects and bugs alone. They have to switch into eating small baitfish and crayfish patterns so we will start throwing those this time of year on big 7 and 8 weight fly rods because they are pretty big flies. You go with a big streamer, you usually catch a pretty big fish.
