What is a streamer bite?

John McPherson who is an outfitter up in Bozeman, Montana said he was catching huge browns on streamer bites. Listen to his description: “This time of year is a great time because the streamer bite is coming back on and it is one of my favorite ways to fish. You can get into targeting the big brown’s this time of year. They are large baitfish patterns, a lot of them are articulated imitating what is already in the river that those fish are feeding on once they grow to a size that they cannot sustain themselves on a diet of aquatic insects and bugs alone. They have to switch into eating small baitfish and crayfish patterns Couple of friends of mine who listen to Sportsmens’ Spotlight all the time called me up and said they were confused because John was talking about flies and then said that Brown’s this time of the year have to sustain themselves on baitfish. So the question was is a stream or bite a flyer or a baitfish? Just for fun I called up old friend and avid fly fisherman Dick Luminella: “ It’s called a streamer bite. A streamer bite? Yes. A streamer bite. 1st off I have never heard of a streamer bite before. Where was this guy in Montana? Bozeman. Okay this is just a guess on my part but all a streamer is either white or black or green marabou hair on it and it resembles a little 2 1/2 to 3 inch baitfish and that is what those browns feed on. Use sling it up against the bank and strip it back and that is what you catch them on but I have never heard of a streamer bite.
