Chad Hood often fishes for salmon in Alaska, and I asked him how he prepared for his trips. I go from Boise to Alaska and then we get flown out and this is the float trip, so it requires a raft or a couple of rafts. But my setup is all contained as a checked bag on a jet. And so on this trip, I actually had the raft and it's not a big raft by any means, but I think it weighs like 80 pounds. So I checked my raft with some of the accessories into as an oversized bag and then all my gear. I usually put it into a large cooler and that comes into play on the back end of the trip when I want to bring fish home and then I have an empty duffel bag as well. But so all my gear and that includes clothing. I get all of my food prep for the trip, and so usually I plan on about three quarters of a pound of food a day. And I also assume that I will catch fish for my dinner. And so if I don't catch fish, I wouldn't say I go hungry, but it's not quite as good. So that's how I cut a few corners, assuming that I'm a good enough fisherman to feed myself for dinner on the fish. So clothes, food gear, all of that, it's all contained. I fly with it on the plane, and that way I don't ship it up or anything and really helps cut down on the cost. Smart in the wilderness, smart in his checking account.
