My good friend and fellow hockey coach told me a story about a caribou hunt that his son took with his grandfather. “He was lucky enough to be up hunting with his grandfather, my dad, up in Alaska this fall, hunting on a river which is a tributary to the Copper, to the interior of Alaska. They were hunting with my dad’s hunting partner of close to 40 years. They were 10 to 12 miles upriver when they came floating down and happened to see a very large bull caribou running along the side of the river. They pulled the boat over to the shore and managed to get off a good shot. My son took him out with one shot to the shoulder and it was an absolute monster. How old is your son? He is 14. What was his reaction? Absolute euphoria. This was his first big game that he has taken. He called me the next day on his cell phone and I thought my cell phone must be on vibrate because it was vibrating in my hand whole time that he was telling me the story. Then I talked to my dad about his story and got the same story from my dad. Isn’t that what hunting is all about? Every large animal that I have ever shot my dad was there with me and now for my son to get to have that same experience with him is absolutely fantastic.
