With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. When I saw this story, I had to do something with it because the Opal Apple is my absolute favorite and First Fruits Farms is running their annual promotion of this delicious apple that I discovered in the grocery store 5-or-6-years ago.

First Fruits Marketing President Chuck Zeutenhorst says it’s a relatively new variety, but it’s been a great ride so far …

ZEUTENHORST … “It takes a lot of time and effort and certainly a lot of money to promote and develop a new apple variety, and this one is no different. So, it’s been 10 years of hard work and we feel like though that the variety, we don’t feel like, the apple, this particular apple variety is doing really, really well and we’re really excited about it.”

So I asked Zeutenhorst, what makes the Opal so different from other varieties? …

ZEUTENHORST … “This apple is butter-yellow. That’s very unique and it has some golden parentage. But what we have found and what makes this apple so significantly different than anything that we have done. We always talk about what makes consumers excited it this apple truly maintains its condition after it’s taken home.”

And, Zeutenhorst says in addition to the flavor profile …

ZEUTENHORST … “Now, there are times and times during the year where condition can be an issue and that’s certainly the number one problem that consumers have with their apple purchases. And, the other part of that is to maintain the flavor profile. Well, this apple has that sweet-tart flavor, and extremely strong apple when it comes to conditions and it maintains that even when you take it home.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the Opal apple we’ll be seeing in the stores very soon.
