Safety and Tree Fruit Pt 2

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Safety measure to keep ag workers safe and healthy is something ag employers are taking very seriously.

Northwest Horticultural Council president, Mark Powers says there are plenty of challenges, but everyone understands it’s something we all have to do …

POWERS-19 = 17 … “I’m not saying it’s easy and I’m not saying it’s perfect because there is no such thing, I don’t think, right now in any economic sector in the United States, but believe me they’re doing everything they can and many times going above and beyond what is called for in the guidelines.”

And, Powers says the public perception of what’s being done to improve safety creates yet another challenge …

POWERS-20 = 15 … “You know, there is a public relations aspect to this. There’s no doubt about that. And, our people tend to be, you know, more on the quiet side and quiet doesn’t necessarily tell your story.”

So, Powers says words are just words, it’s the actions that really matter …

POWERS … “The public relations side is a challenge, there’s no doubt about it, because it’s pretty easy to say some things that may stretch the truth or may represent a very, very, very small fraction of the population versus many folks that continue to go to work and do what they need to do to keep America fed.”

Listen tomorrow for more on the challenges of keeping workers safe and healthy during the pandemic and what it will take to make it through to the other side of normal.
