Talking with Hunter outdoorsman and sportsman's podcaster Brian Huskey about his wide range of knowledge concerning cactus bucks. “His antlers will grow throughout his entire life and remain in velvet and they grow often very non typical, deformed manner. This buck had a strange looking rack in structure, but was also still involved in growing as every other deer and elk does only for those short periods of the year before they shed. So it's very, very stunning and rare experience to end up with a cactus buck. But since they never shed does the rack get monstrously big. Not necessarily, because they don't grow at the same rate that a normal deer's antlers will develop in a matter of three and a half months of growth. So the short answer is absolutely not.

Okay, so your experience was with a muley. What about Whitetail or Black Tail? Other kinds of deer? Yes. Any kind of deer can. Well, the cactus buck phenomenon does occur in mule deer, white tailed deer that I'm aware of and maybe even others. I'm not sure that I've ever seen or heard of it in elk, but it's certainly something that is nationwide. I've seen pictures of and read about with White Tail and mule deer.
