Especially during all this stay at home time, there is more snacking, according to Jennifer Olmstead, Domestic Marketing Director and PR at the California Walnut Board and Commission

“As an industry we were already going to be launching a stacking campaign this spring and into summer,” said Olmstead.

She said they wanted to see if people are still snacking as they did before the pandemic. “And we did a quick piece of research and found that about half of Americans are actually snacking more so it's a really good time for California Walnuts to be talking about how they make such a fantastic snack. We know from our own research that it's a top way that our consumers are using walnuts, but they're also using them both in sweet and savory ways, so that gives people a lot of opportunity,” Olmstead said.

We asked Olmsted, how are they actually snacking? “A lot of it is just snacking out of hand, but some people are snacking on them in more savory ways where they might be pairing them with cheese, for example. They might be adding some Chipotle seasoning,” she said. “Or they might be doing something on the sweeter side, such as putting together a parfait or dipping them in chocolate. But we've been having a lot of fun with that because we've been asking our influencers to kind of take a side, let us know if they prefer walnuts as sweet or savory, and then give their own followers some inspiration on how to snack on walnuts,” Olmstead explained.
