I’m Bob Larson. The USDA has come out with many details about the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program to help farmers and ranchers hit by the pandemic, but it appears this is likely just another step along the way to recovery.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse agrees, saying this is one of possibly several steps…

NEWHOUSE … “Well, it is a good step and I applaud USDA for coming out with the guidelines and more specificity on how the funds will be distributed among our nation’s farmers.”

Then, there will be probably be more aid coming? …

NEWHOUSE … “But you’re right, it is a good step, but there’s a tremendous amount of impact in agriculture and this will be a comparatively small part of the losses that we’re incurring nation-wide.”

So, Newhouse says the USDA is working with producers to figure out what’s needed now and down the road …

NEWHOUSE … “And, to that end, the Secretary has been doing the best he can to be able to spread the assistance out to as many people as possible. So, I think that’s part of the reason that it took quite a bit of time to come out with the rules and the guidance, but it also points to just what you’re saying, that there may be need for further assistance.”

Newhouse says not all of the money will be used right away and will be held back further into summer when we know more about the losses.

Tune in tomorrow for more.
