The stats keepers at the National Agricultural Statistics Office have compiled the results of the Honey Production Survey.

NASS Mountain Regional Field Office Director Bill Meyers says Colorado honey producers saw a slight dip in production in 2019. Nationally honey production levels were up slightly.

Meyers: “We’re estimating in Colorado, honey production in 2019 - and this is with a place with 5 or more colonies - totaled 1.4 million pounds. That’s down 1% from last year. There were 32,000 colonies producing. That was up 3 % from 2018. Average yield per colony was 46 pounds per colony. That was down slightly from the previous year and down 4% from 2017.

At the US level, honey production totaled 157 million pounds and that was up 2% from 2018. There were 2.8 million colonies producing honey. That was down 1% from 2018. The average yield at the national level was 55.8 pounds per colony.”

Colorado honey prices increased during 2019 to $2.14 per pound, up 4 percent from $2.05 per pound in 2018. U S honey prices decreased 11% during 2019 to $1.97 per pound, compared to $2.21 per pound in 2018. U S and State level prices reflect the portions of honey sold through cooperatives, private, and retail channels.
