Dairy producers looking for new methods for manure management may be in luck. The CDFA has extended the deadline for the AMMP Program to April 27th.

AMMP stands for Alternative Manure Management Program. It awards competitive grants to California dairy and livestock operations for technologies and specific management practices that result in long-term methane emission reductions and maximize environmental benefits.

Renata Brillinger is the Executive Director of the California Climate and Agriculture Network.

Brillinger…”The grants go up to $750,000 per project, and it pays entirely for the replacement of that kind of technology with a variety of options, all of which eliminate flushing and lead to drier manure handling processes. So that's things like scraping the manure out of the barns instead of flushing, separating the solids from the liquids, composting the manure. Sometimes by removing at first and putting it in wind rows or sometimes composting it right under the cattle. There's a technology called compost pack barns. Or moving the cattle more frequently into pasture so the manure is distributed and therefore not as much as put into the lagoons in the first place.”

The deadline for applications is April 27th with $10 million in total funding available.
