There's lots of research to back up how walnuts can protect your health. That’s according to Jennifer Olmstead, marketing director for domestic public relations for the California Walnut board and Commission.

“We've known that walnuts have had heart health benefits for the last couple of decades. We've had a lot of research that has been promising in that area, but we're finding some really exciting research in areas such as gut health and cognitive function. So all areas worth more exploration

And it gets better than that. According to the largest study of its kind, which was done by Harvard University, people who ate a daily handful of nuts, any nuts, were 20% less likely to die from any cause over a 30 year period than those who did not consume nuts.

And of course, getting more people to eat walnuts daily is the goal of the California Walnut commission and board. “There's a lot of opportunity here at home to grow the domestic market and I think especially in product development. So we're trying to make some end roads in that area to inspire use of walnuts in new products and give people new ways to experience California walnuts,” said Olmstead.

“We're working directly with product developers to inspire them by giving them tools and resources and information about why they should be using California walnuts in their products,” she said.

And of course we are seeing more walnut butters and Walnut milks in the marketplace.
