I’m Bob Larson. The old phrase “You’re a good egg” could be taking on a whole new meaning after recent studies seem to indicate that eggs aren’t the cholesterol carrying nemesis many of us grew up believing.

Dr. Tia Rains, Executive Director at the Egg Nutrition Center, says quite the opposite…

RAINS … “And you’re right, back in the 60’s and 70’s, that’s when eggs were defined only by their cholesterol content. And so, for years and years and years we’ve been doing research looking at the cholesterol you eat and how that relates to the cholesterol in your blood. In heart disease and what the research has shown is that eggs do not increase your risk of heart disease and there is a weak to little, no-effect on dietary cholesterol, now blood cholesterol.”

Dr. Rains says that was the turning point …

RAINS … “Once that research occurred and people were getting comfortable with the idea that eggs were not bad for you, that’s when the research shifted and people started looking at, ‘okay, what else might be in eggs that could have a positive effect on health?’ And, that’s really what the research, where that’s been in the last 10 years. And so, we’ve seen just some really exciting things come out of this science that I think are shift how we look at eggs.”

Dr. Rains says a recent study found eating an egg a day decreased the risk of stroke by 12%.

Listen tomorrow when she tells us about the two key ingredients that are essential for brain development and memory function.
