Cattle and Calves are Colorado’s top agricultural commodities. The state has more than 2.8 million head of cattle. The Colorado Beef Council represents the $3.4 billion beef industry building demand both domestically and abroad.

Todd Inglee Executive Director of the Colorado Beef Council says 2020 will see the CBC focusing on meat substitutes. While plant-based meat products are still a very small segment of the consumer market they are getting a lot of attention with new products coming on line all the time.

Inglee: “Meat substitutes only take up about 1 percent of the retail market share. Food service is even less than that. National research shows that meat substitutes represent 1.33 percent as far as food service goes. But people are aware that it’s out there. It’s probably a bigger issue with producers because they feel threatened. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and we need to address that to make sure people understand how beef is raised.”

The Beef Council has two new board members to help with that task. Governor Polis tapped Joanie Shoemaker and Dr. John Skanga to serve 4 year terms.

Scanga grew up in Central Colorado on his family’s ranching operation . Scanga currently works as vice president of quality assurance for Meyer Natural Foods, where he is responsible for the safety, quality and regulatory compliance. He will serve on the board’s beef Processor/Distributor seat.

Shoemaker’s family raise cattle and own Bunk House Burgers in Canon City. She also has roles with the Colorado CattleWomen’s Association. She was appointed to fill the beef Processor/Marketer seat on the board.
