The Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is urging Colorado’s organic agriculture producers to respond to the 2019 Organic Survey.

Each producer who self-reported organic farming in the 2017 Census of Agriculture will receive a unique survey code. The code allows them to respond online. They’ll be represented in the once-every-five-year data survey.

Daphne Schauber is with the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Schauber: “These special studies are super important because they give us more detailed special information on these particular commodities or practices. That’s beneficial for researchers who are looking at doing specific research for organic production, looking at better crop insurance programs, provides crop insurance companies information that they need, policy makers, it gives them information about organic producers and what they’re facing. Farm organizations use it to lobby congress or state legislators for funding and supporting their programs.”

Colorado has approximately 247 organic farms with more than 134 million in annual sales according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture

NASS has sent letters with survey codes to more than 1,100 producers involved in certified or transitioning to certified organic farming in the Mountain Regional states of Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
