Colorado’s state Hemp Plan may be a model for other states and help the USDA in its nationwide hemp plan.

Industrial Hemp Program Manager Brian Koontz tells Colorado Ag today the plan should be approved by the USDA by January.

And he says while he gets calls from hemp administrators from around the country looking to see how Colorado has created it’s program, there’s still a lot of unknowns right here.

KOONTZ: “We’re still not sure how to anticipate future growth. Obviously it’s not going to double every year. Now that other states are implementing hemp programs, Colorado won’t be the only one. Colorado is still a pretty economical state to cultivate hemp, we’ve got more processing facilities than most other states. But as far as doing any budget projections or planning projections, it’s hard to say how much it will grow it will certainly grow more.”

He says states with fledgling hemp industries call his office with questions about sampling procedures and lab testing and issues around compliance.

Koontz says he has been in constant contact with the USDA and the agency is looking to Colorado for comments and feedback on the new federal hemp rules.
