Winter Weather Outlook Pt 1

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. We are well into our fall weather with winter just around the corner, leaving many of us, like we do every year, wondering what we could be in for this season.

University of Washington professor and state climatologist, Nick Bond says with the cold we’ve seen the past week or two, we should start getting more answers very soon …

BOND … “We’re getting to the time of year where, of course, where we should be starting to build up the snowpack. Right now, for the Cascades in general, it is definitely on the skimpy side, but it’s so early in the season, you know, it’s way too soon to really get worried about it.”

And as for last February’s snow, Bond says brrr …

BOND … “Yeah, February 2019 into March was very unusual. We haven’t had kind of a period like that for 30-years, actually, February 1989 was the last time we just had such an extended cold period.”

Which, like last year, can be costly …

BOND … “Like you say, there was some tragic loss of cattle in the Yakima area with some of the coldest weather there. So, something like that, while it’s possible is highly unlikely.”

So, for this year, Bond says slightly warmer and a little wetter than average, but nothing to worry about.

Listen tomorrow for more.
