With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Stemilt Growers continues giving back to the industry and the community and was recently recognized by the Washington Apple Education Foundation as its Group Volunteer of the Year.

Stemilt’s Brianna Shales says helping ag students helps the apple producers as well as the communities we live in …

SHALES … “I’ve had a chance to sit at the scholarship luncheon a few years and you have a lot of Washington State University Cougars in there that are seeking an agriculture degrees, but then agriculture also touches a lot of other industries like accounting and sales, marketing, production, so there’s a variety of jobs in our industry. And so, if students want to come back to their home towns or reside in

Eastern Washington, it’s a very viable industry for that.”

Shales says it’s the right thing to do …

SHALES … “We’ll continue supporting our employee’s children through these scholarships and we also have some cool internship opportunities as summer approaches for college students to tap into. That’s outside of WAEF, but it’s a really good on-the-job experience for them during our busy cherry season.”

But, Shales says much of the credit goes to WAEF …

SHALES … “Hats off to WAEF. They’ve been doing this 25 years and we’re just a small piece of their big work that they do to support students, not only financially, but also, they support them all throughout their college journey through a lot of special, unique programs. So, it’s fun to be part of.”

Shales says every WAEF volunteer plays a part in shaping the next generation of professionals while keeping them connected to their tree fruit industry roots.
