With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. December is National Pear Month, but coming on Sunday is World Pear Day.

And, Pear Bureau Northwest’s Kathy Stephenson says starting off in New Zealand, everyone’s invited to participate in the 24-hour trip around the world through social media …

STEPHENSON … “Yeah, we’ll be having that on our Twitter account, which you can reach at USAPears, that’s with an ‘s’, and then we’ll do a little bit on Facebook and Instagram as well, but mostly the hourly activities will be happening on our Twitter account.”

And, Stephenson says their Twitter trip has been very popular …

STEPHENSON … “It’s our fourth year of doing it and the first year was really just a fun way to connect with our international team, but it has turned into more of a consumer event. And now, in this country too, we’re actually having a thousand in-store sampling events.”

Stephenson says it helps get pears some face-time in 24 different markets …

STEPHENSON … “So, a fun way for us to get out there and get some fresh, wonderful pears in not only our international consumer’s hands, but also in North America as well.”

And then, the finale …

STEPHENSON … “The final event will be working with our growers in Leavenworth, Washington at the annual Tree Lighting Festival. And, that’ll be a fun opportunity to have growers first-hand, you know, talking about how we’re celebrating the season that are so strong with pears.”

To follow the fun, go to www.usapears.org and follow on their social media channels using #WorldPearDay hashtag.
