The Colorado Department of Agriculture has to fill three important positions on the state Noxious Weed Advisory Committee. The CDA is looking for nominations through December 29th,

The 17 members of the committee are appointed by the Commissioner of Agriculture. They help shape CDA and state policy concerning noxious weeds

Steve Ryder, State Weed Coordinator says their recommendations help protect landowners, agricultural lands and the environment. The members also play an important role in the distribution of state grants to eradicate noxious weeds. The grants are appropriated through the state and given to local organizations.

Ryder: “Local entities, primarily counties, some municipalities a few conservation districts and a few non profit organizations who are involved in noxious weed management. We usually have requests from local entities for over a million to 1.2 million so we can only fund right now about 60 percent of the requests that are made annually. We’ll get together in February and make decisions on awards for funding and get that through the state or granting process and and then on the ground.”

Yellow Starthistle, Meadow Knapweed, Flowering Rush and African Rue are just a few of the noxious weeds designated for eradication. Dozens more are subject to plans to stop their spread.

The Department of Ag is taking nominations for open positions on the Noxious Weed Advisory Committee for an agriculture professional, a municipal weed manager and a weed scientist from a Colorado college or university.
