One-third of America’s 3.4 million farmers are over the age of 65 and nearly a million more are within a decade of that milestone, according to USDA data.

What happens when they’re gone? That very serious question has led Colorado Department of Ag to announce its first Family Farm Transition Summit. The Summit is set for December 9 and 10 in Westminster.

Mark Gallegos, with the Inspection and Consumer Services Division says the summit is the result of discussions with Colorado State University Extension about the need for farmers to start making plans to keep their operations going.

Gallegos: “Financial planners, bankers, cpa’s, attorneys, who would be working in this space that would have the skill set not only to get people to a point where they’re ready to sit down with an attorney or public accountant but also have the aptitude to work with agricultural families. That realize not only is it a farm or ranch, it’s a family business. There’s a lot of dynamics involved with family businesses. “

As Gallegos said lenders, wealth advisors, cpa’s, and attorneys are invited to attend. The goal is to increase awareness of available services and increase the network of service providers.

This event is limited to 100 people. online registration is encouraged. For more information, contact Mark Gallegos and marka.gallegos@state.co.us or 303-869-9093.
