Executive chef Randy King went on a black tailed deer hunt in Kodiak Alaska. “This past fall I went up to Kodiak, Alaska and went on a solo backpack hunt out of their. What is cool about Kodiak is, there are three different areas. There is the beach, then a big cliff than mountains that goes straight up. At 4 feet and I shot my deer at 1700 feet. I climbed that in one day. What’s amazing about Kodiak is the grass is really tall and the deer are kind of short so you lose them in the grass and all the deer feed in what they call the sub alpine which is basically the tops of all of these mountains on the island. So you can be done on the beach glassing these animals that are a mile or more away and you just have to get up to them. I managed to pull that off, I climbed up to the top and saw lots of those. Finally just settled down and started blasting the area and spotted a little buck. I have hunted for 25 years and as soon as I put my scope on that buck, I started shaking like I was 10 again. It was literally physical shaking of my hand and I couldn’t stop because it was one of these things where I had dreamed of hunting these black tailed deer for so long and it had been something I was so looking forward to, just having the opportunity to be successful, put my heart rate through the roof and I had to stop and sit on the side of a mountain for about five minutes and watch this buck feed before I finally took a shot at him and I got him.
