Minimalism

Ever heard the term conspicuous consumption, like overbuying and overdoing it may be changing in the outdoor world? From tree saddles to truck camping. The minimalist movement is winning over hardcore deer hunters who are streamlining their gear and having more fun than ever. I talked with outdoor life editor in chief Alex Robinson.

I love hunting gear as much as the next guy, but this is about identifying the most effective, most essential gear and getting rid of all of the other clutter. So, you know, not running 20 different trail cameras and tree stands. Some of this has to do with being really mobile. You know, the less gear that you have, the more mobile you're able to be, a lot of kind of the cutting edge trend for deer hunters these days is the hang and hunt strategy, where you just kind of go in speed scout, find a place that has a lot of really hot deer sign. Hang your stand right there. Or in this case, maybe you're hunting out of a tree saddle and then hunt right there. It's just, you know, kind of less disturbance in the woods. You're able to hunt areas that, you know, are getting a lot of deer activity. And it's just kind of a fun way to not overburden with a ton of deer in your truck garage. Experiencing the fun of deer hunting in a way that's kind of like light and active.

Is it minimalism or just common sense… taking only what you need?
