USMCA Importance with Newhouse

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Three former heads of State Agriculture Departments, including our own U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse, are calling on Congress to express how important quick passage of the USMCA is to agriculture.

This, after the President made the same plea last week …

NEWHOUSE … “Well, I couldn’t agree more with the President. I think that the approval by Congress of USMCA is long overdue.”

Newhouse says a lot of work went into making it just right …

NEWHOUSE … “The agreement has been perfected. The Democrats, under the leadership of Speaker Pelosi, have looked at many of the parts of it that I think they had problems with and, even one of the chairmen of committees went to Mexico to meet with the Mexican government on the USMCA.”

Unfortunately, he says there have been some distractions of late …

NEWHOUSE … “As I said earlier, there’s just a lot of things that aren’t getting the attention that they deserve here in Congress. There’s a lot of preoccupation with other things that cause us to ignore important issues that need solutions.”

Newhouse says passage is so important …

NEWHOUSE … “Helping our trade situation so our producers have markets available to them, access to those markets is definitely high on the list of what needs to be accomplished and the USMCA will be a big part of that.”

Now, Newhouse says, we must build on these trade relationships to show Americans and the world that the U.S. is open for business.
