Tractor Safety Reminder #2

With the farm and ranch report, I'm Rick Worthington. Yesterday, we talked about tractor safety in light of a continuing a disturbing trend in the farming industry, which shows accidents continue to happen at an alarming rate. Sadly, many of those accidents do include children. Diane Kampa with the Agricultural Safety and Health Center says we need to do more to keep kids safe on the farm.

You know, the farm operation is where people live and work. And those young people are really sometimes just a little bit too curious and used to being out over and around and sometimes can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And we all want that to happen. One of them is keeping those kids off of a tractor when possible. It's a great lifelong tradition. But we have seen so many injuries with kids and tractors that we really want parents to think about being parents first and then making those special moments in different ways.

On the farm, I told you the statistic yesterday, but it's worth repeating. Did you know farm workers are 800 percent more likely to die on the job than in other industries? The Farm Injury Resource Center says tractor accidents are the leading cause of injury and death among farmers and farm workers. Kampa says the most important thing a farmer can do is promote safety to take care of themselves, their family and their fellow farm workers.
