The Ticks Are Out

If you're like me these little guys will make you cringe. That's right, there's nothing worse than finding a big fat juicy tick on the side of your dog. The other day I got our local veterinarian on the phone to answer a few questions about tick prevention.

"It seems like the ticks are pretty bad this year, when do they usually start coming out?"

Veterinarian "Ya, there's definitely a lot of ticks in the area, they started coming out probably early March, and they're pretty bad this year."

"What are some of the better tick prevention medications for dog owners?"

"There's a few things you can use for dogs for tick prevention, my favorite is a product call Bravecto. It's an oral chew that you feed to your dog one time, and it's beef flavored like a little treat. It provides 3 months of flea and tick prevention. It's great for clients who can't always remember to use the topical like Frontline, which has to be applied monthly. This is nice because it provides 3 months of protection. If you do want to use the topical, Frontline is a great option and that's something that you apply at the base of the neck right to the skin, but it has to be applied once monthly. That does fleas and ticks as well, in dogs. You want to make sure you are getting your products from a veterinarian because if you are going to a lot of the retail stores, you aren't going to get that 100 % guarantee behind the product."

I'll be sure to ask my local veterinarian the next time I'm at the clinic.
