Any hunter will tell you that shot placement is everything. Well here is Kirk Keifer who hunts the Idaho panhandle. The habituate is dense terrain similar to that west of the Cascades where most opportunities on deer and elk are in closer ranges even with a bow. Here is Kirks theology on shot placement.

One of the most challenging things for a new archery hunter is to determine how long to wait after a well-placed shot. Sometimes waiting feels like it goes against every natural instinct after the adrenaline rush.

Something else to remember is calling can help bed the elk down. It calms them and makes them feel more comfortable with their surroundings. They will usually lie down within a few hundred yards, if they aren't being pushed.
