Regional Weekly Hay Report

Here is USDA Grain and Livestock Reporter Greg Sanders with the Columbia Basin Hay report from last week.

Sanders: "This week 17,800 tons of hay trade. Compared to last Friday all grades of domestic and export alfalfa were steady. Trade was moderate even though most of the trade area had rain showers earlier in the week. Demand good for export quality and small square bales of dairy and export Timothy hay. Supreme dairy hay in the mid-size square bale sold at $160. Export hay sold from $150 to $165 on the premium. Small square premium alfalfa for the retail/stable market sold for $250. Orchard grass small squares good and premium for the retail/stable market sold for $175."

In Idaho compared the previous week all grades of alfalfa were weak. Trade was slow to moderate with light to moderate demand. Mid-square bales of alfalfa rated supreme sold between $125 and $137 per ton with good to premium rated mid-squares of alfalfa for $130 per ton.

In Oregon, prices trended generally steady compared to the previous week in a very limited test. Some hay producers are starting to cut, market and sell new crop hay. In Lake County alfalfa large squares rated fair old crop sold for $130 per ton. In Central Oregon, alfalfa small squares rated fair old crop sold for $185 per ton for the retail stable market. In Klamath Basin meadow grass small square bales rated premium sold for $240 per ton for the retail/stable market. There were no new sales confirmed in Eastern Oregon or in Harney County.
