Don't Forget to Register Your Drone

Earlier this week the Federal Aviation Administration announced that recreational users of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or drones, must register their systems with the federal government via a new website, which goes live Monday, Dec. 21. National Corn Growers Association Executive Vice President Jon Doggett says
Doggett: “There are a lot of people on farms and ranches who are excited about this technology. They want to use drones for a lot of different purposes. We see this as a great potential tool for farmers and ranchers. A lot of people are going to get drones for Christmas this year. And make sure you are in compliance with the law. Go and registered it. Make sure that the FAA has your paperwork. Then go and use it, be careful. Use it wisely. As this technology evolves we’re going to see more and more options and potentials for this to be a great technology for people to use.”
Anyone using a hobby UAS that weights from .55 pounds to 55 pounds is required to register as a UAS operator. Operators who purchase a UAS prior to December 21st must register by Feb. 19th. Anyone purchasing a UAS after 21st must register before they first fly outdoors. Drone registration will cost $5 per operator, however the register fee will be waived for the first 30 days.
For more information or to register your hobby drone beginning Dec. 21, visit www.faa.gov/uas/registration.
