Winter Wheat Planting Progress

Winter Wheat Planting Progress

It really depends if there has been any moisture in your area as to whether there has been any winter wheat planting activity. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey gives the National Ag Statistics Service's numbers nationwide.

Rippey: "As of September 20th the crop is nearly 1/5 planted — 19 percent. Five year average is 20 percent and last year 23 percent. We see a wide variety of planting progress across the Plains as it appears some producers may be waiting for rain before planting. Almost half complete in Colorado, 45 percent versus 36 percent for the five-year average and almost 36 percent last year."

In Idaho 25 percent of the winter wheat crop has been planted compared to 24 percent five-year average and 27 percent from a year ago. Emergence is at 4 percent compared to 1 percent for both the five=year average and last year's average.

In Washington 53 percent of the state's winter wheat crop was planted compared to the five-average of 56 percent and last year's 55 percent. Emergence was at 27 percent compared to the five-year average of 30 percent and last year's 24 percent.

In Oregon, 9 percent of winter wheat crop planting was complete compared to the five-year average of 15 percent and last year's 19 percent.
